Customer Reviews
I'm using the Canon MP490 at home with a Mac Book Pro Intel Core Duo OSX 10.5.8. I found the set up very straightforward and encountered no problems. As mentioned in another review, the USB cord is not included. Print quality/tone was very good for both photos and plain documents. Color ran a bit to the green end. Scanning and copying were also uncomplicated. Inserting the SD card from my digital camera into the printer immediately brought up the image on the LCD screen, ready to print. iPhoto also started up automatically on my laptop, ready to import the images from the SD card in the printer-very slick. Controls were fairly intuitive as was the menu on the compass control. Print speed was on the slow side, so if your needs require high volume printing, this is probably not the right printer for you. The included software loaded easily and works fairly well. Ink costs are high for OEM replacement cartridge. There are ink refill kits on the web for this model to reduce costs considerably-I have no experience refilling these particular cartridges, but have found it to be very economical in my other Canon and HP printers. I have had the printer for only three days so I cannot speak to its long-term dependability. My initial impression is that the MP490 is an inexpensive, very good quality printer with easy set-up and helpful software. It is ideal for low-volume home use.

Addendum 10/3/2010- about two months ago I began having problems with the printer shutting down during long (more than 3 or 4 page) jobs. This happens intermittently, but is quite annoying when it does-you have to re-print the whole job. Refilling the ink cartridges is fairly simple initially, but failed to work after 2 or 3 fills. I would no longer recommend this printer.

I've been so tired of the bloatware software/drivers that come with HP's. My company has one of the high end Canon machines in the office so I thought I would try one of their home machines. Setup was easy. The software/driver install was easy, did not take forever and did not load up my machine with bloatware crap. It is a straight forward easy to use software and machine that works. I have no complaints. I will be buying Canons for now on at home.

Customer Reviews
I researched this printer against higher priced HP printers at Costco. This printer had better ratings so I bought it. The first thing I noticed was the installation compared to my old wireless HP 6980 (which it replaced) was awesome. 3 Laptops wirelessly connected and a desktop usb connection all within 30 minutes. Just connect it to your wireless SSID with the password, put in the disk load the software and it works for XP, Vista and Win 7 (comes with a MAC disk but I am too poor to afford one of those) the disk software will find the printer for you and connect it laptop or whatever. Do try to do it in windows by adding a printer and browsing the network or by going to your router to add it, none of that is needed, in fact it probably won't work if you try to do it that way which I did by habit. I printed out test pages from each and the print quality was great. I don't plan on using this for photos, that's what costco online is for at 9cents a 6x9 who would be foolish enough to do prints on a Inkjet anyway? This mainly going to used for letters, printing from the internet, scanning and copying.
Also the ink cartridges cost considerably less than my HP ones that are $72 bucks for a combo pack. HP is going to goodwill. Also you can load the entire installation CD on a thumbdrive or hard drive and keep it there so you don't have to hunt around for a CD or you can load multiple systems at the same time. I would give it 5 stars but it is a bit loud, no reason not to buy. I would recommend the printer to a friend.

Customer Reviews
First of all, these consumer reviews are the best and twice now have helped me to either rectify a bad purchase decision or make the right decision first time. So thanks to all who take the time to contribute.

This printer is EXCELLENT in almost every respect. The quality of the printed images is unbelievable - even on 'standard' output. It far exceeds the quality of the Epson RX500 we were using previously. Its FAST. We print in 'batches'; sometimes as many as sixty 8.5"x11"s at a time. This printer is an absolute dream. To have superior quality photos run off at speed is very very valuable to us as a small business. So far, ink usage appears better than the Epson, but only time will tell and we have only had the printer a week.

The reason I gave this printer 4 stars and not 5 is because we operate a small network of computers with mostly PCs, and one Mac. The printer is hooked up to one of the PCs via USB as a 'shared' printer. Although the Mac can see it, it can't print to it through the network (unlike all the other printers we have owned, including the Epson). My suspicion is that this is due to a driver issue since the printer model isn't available through the Print & Fax function when the remote printer is being selected. It IS available when the Mac is hooked up directly to the printer, without going via the network.

Knowing this, would I make a different choice of printer or take this one back? Absolutely no way. The advantages of this printer are so far superior to anything else we could find on the market at a reasonable price-point, I consider it worth the inconvenience to the Mac user (who is me!). Great printer, and fingers crossed a 'fix' will be available soon to rectify the network issue.

Customer Reviews
My ancient HP G5 All-In-One finally croaked, so I ordered one of these. I didn't really expect it would be any good considering how cheap it is, but I have been pleasantly surprised. The construction is really excellent, and it looks a lot better than most of the flimsy competition I looked at from HP and the rest. There aren't any floppy pieces dangling off it waiting to get broken. I am using it with an iMac 30" running OS X 10.6.3.

Setup was fairly straightforward using the wireless connection. The manual takes about 50 pages to get round to telling you that all you need to do is hit the menu button on the printer and find the LAN sub-menu, then choose the network and enter the password. The software for the iMac pretty much installs itself.

The included software is good. This is usually a problem with Macs and printers/scanners, but not this time. The scanner will scan straight into Mail, or into your Pictures folder, in jpg, tiff, or pdf. The scans are excellent, much better than the stand-alone HP Scanjet I paid $300 for not so long ago. Print quality is quite good, and reasonably fast, but I really got this for scanning and faxing, with just light duty printing when I don't want to walk over to the laser printer.

I am still laughing to myself over the insane value this represents. I honestly can't remember ever getting such a great piece of gear so cheap. It cost more to buy the Airport Express that hooks it to the LAN. I have never posted a review on Amazon before, but this machine is just so great that I had to.

Canon PIXMA MX439 Review

Customer Reviews
I bought this because regardless of all the apps on the iPad, iPhone and Itouch that claimed it will work without having an AirPrint compatible printer I could not get one to work and I probably paid 25 bucks on apps that would not work.. Well I got this little printer and it's great. I've faxed with ease and printed gorgeous photo lab prints on it. So this printer fills the bill for me. It does not say so in the ad for this printer but it is AirPrint capable without having to add any apps to it. I did have a wireless printer, a new one in fact. and gave up on it when I could not find any Print app that would work on it .. This printer is a beauty and worth it. You can pay more money for similar Canon printers but this does it all.. I'm happy with this purchase and I can print all I want from my iPhone, iTouch and iPad with ease. Great buy ..I need to mention to that it is pic bridge compatible as well it is also mobile compatible and is supposed to work with the Android devices. It has many more features that it deserves serious consideration.

Customer Reviews

This is the second Canon PIXMA printer that I've owned. I gave my other PIXMA to my mama-in-law and she's been happy with it.

Right out of the box, this printer was easy to setup. Remove the packaging, follow a few steps and Windows 7 was up and running. There was some bloat-ware that came on the CD and I opted not to install some of the additional photo editing utilities. Just something to be aware of. You need to install most of the packages if you want to scan images.

The nice part about this printer is that the paper loads horizontally on the bottom of the printer. This eliminates that curl that you get in paper in some printers where the paper tray is in the rear of the printer and vertical.

Another huge feature on a small printer like this is that it duplexes. I really hate going through extra paper and it's very easy to find the duplex option. It's been working like a charm.

That being said, I wish I could give you more details in this review regarding the card reading, and the scanning. I haven't used the scan very much. Wireless setup was a piece of cake with Windows. No issues there. I have used the copy feature a few times and that worked quite well.

I can't speak too much regarding the ink usage. All ink jet printers seem to just suck ink dry if you print constantly. At least this is split into a single black cartridge and another one for color. It's still easy to go through a ton of ink without doing much.

All in all, this printer does a lot of things quite well. I definitely recommend it.

Customer Reviews
I set up my new Canon Pixma MX870 last night. Took me 30 minutes to setup the printer and install on both my iMac and MacBook. Both Mac's run Mac OS X 10.4.11. I did have a hard time selecting a brand. I normally buy only HP printers but after my last AIO deskjet 6200 decided to breakdown again and the wireless deskjet 6800 worked only 1/2 the time I wanted to try a Canon or Epson. I will admit, I haven't owned a Canon printer since my old bubblejet from 1994. But it lasted until new OS's would no longer support it. I decided to buy the MX870 instead of the MX860 since I have read on several different sites that the 870 solves plenty of issues plagued by Mac users and has a better print speed. I also read that the MX860 was slow to start. Well, my MX870 was pretty quick starting up and gives a quality print. The wireless is awesome. Much easier to install than my last HP. I haven't tried printing any photos just yet. I am happy to see that there are 5 separate print cartridges. This printer is a great value for the money. I will say that if printing high quality photos and CD/DVDs is important to you, you should go for the Epson Artisan 810 instead. However, if you want a quality AIO without breaking the bank, choose the Canon Pixma MX870

Customer Reviews
This is a very nice compact printer, it folds up for easy storage and and does not take up much room on a counter. It is pretty simple and works like a normal printer, it offers a nice scan bed (with the top door being able to raise a little bit to support books and larger items and still have a white background). It has a little LCD screen, and simple menus, it has a slot for SD and Memory Stick Duo cards (mostly Sony products). It can scan and copy from the printer (I normally use the scan function from my computer and not the one on the scanner). It only uses two ink cartridges (which is shocking for a photo printer).
Installation was very simple and I was able to just use the Nearby Printers on my Mac and it was added instantly and ready to go (I guess the Mac already had the drivers for it or they were super small, since it did not take anytime! I was also able to detect the Printer from my iPhone (AirPrint). On my Mac and iPhone have Double Sided printing, and it automatically can do both sides.
This printer prints great pages and they look sharp and clean, it provides the same great printing that my large HP OfficeJet offers. However, this printer excels with Photo Printing! I put in some HP 4x6 Photo Paper and sent a print job (Borderless 4x6) and it looked great there was no smearing or anything, right out of the printer you could run your finger across it and not smear it. It does take it some time to print (about 2 minutes for my borderless 4x6 print), but for these results I can wait! They were very sharp and looked great!
The only changes I would make to this printer (if I could), is a better user interaction (the wording on the LCD screen could be tweaked a little and the button layout should be adjusted, since it is sometimes confusing). I would also have liked to have two trays, one for photo paper, and one for regular paper, so you could print to photo or letter without having to change the paper, since it excels at Photo Printing I am using my OfficeJet for Letter size and put 4x6 Photo Paper in this guy!
In the end this is a great printer, it communicated with my Mac and iPhone excellently (did not even use the CD), it offers all the features you probably need for basic printing and offers a great photo! There are a few tweaks I would of have liked to see, however, it is super small and can be folded up to take up no room! I am happy with this printer and am enjoying it. My usual problem with printers is ink consumption and I will see how long these cartridges last! But for now, it is perfect, small and provides an excellent Photo Printer!

This is an awesome printer that has everything I'm looking for in a printer at a great price point when you can get it on sale (which it is currently). This printer works perfectly right out of the box, I was able to quickly join it to my wireless-n network (only works with 2.4ghz by the way) and my Lion-enabled Macbook Pro quickly discovered the printer and downloaded and installed the driver. The only thing you will need a USB cable for is firmware updates. Out of the box, the printer does have an older firmware, and if you want to be able to Airprint from your iPhone or iPad you need to update the firmware. Once you do the firmware, which is a quick and easy process, you can easily print from your iPhone or iPad, as long as they are on the same wireless network as the printer, they will auto discover it and you can print right to the printer! Look Ma! No Wires!! One thing to note about this printer, when you hook up the USB cable and do the firmware upgrade, for some reason after you unplug the cable, the Mac doesn't go back to using it wirelessly, I had to go into printers, remove it, and then add it back in. No biggie, it quickly found it on the network and re-added it - no driver installing or downloading required.

I am a DJ so I needed the CD Printing so I can make professional demos for prospective clients, and it works perfectly. It comes with software that lets you print CD's. The software is pretty basic and doesn't have a lot of templates, but it gets the job done, and I was able to quickly print out onto a printable CD-R. A few things to note here. One reviewer complained about lining up the tray. The slot for the tray fits the tray perfect, so you don't have to worry about that. There's a little line in the slot, and a line on the tray. You do need to make sure they line up perfectly or it will print the label a little high or a little low depending on how you line it up. I think with practice you'll probably be a pro after a couple of tries, but I don't think the reviewer is very fair in saying that it's a huge drawback to the cd printing, I was able to print a label that was only about 1/4" too high on my first try.

Photo printing is flawless. The printer came with two 5 packs of 4x5 photo paper. I was able to easily print a photo from iPhoto that looked pretty good. I'm not a professional photographer so I can't give you an accurate review of the actual picture quality, but it was impressive enough that I feel I could use it to make gifts for family and friends during the holidays.

One drawback I've found is if you don't use the printer often, it does take a long time to print the first page. I think this is common for most ink jet printers, it has to go through some priming/cleaning/etc of the print head before it prints the first page out after a long period of inactivity. I'm only speaking to photos, I think black and white text print outs are a little faster on first print then pictures are.

Another pro about this printer is that when you're not using it, it's completely sealed. The front of the printer closes, which keeps all the dust bunnies out! And the coolest thing of all is that the lid automatically opens whenever you print something. The printer is also "eco friendly" which means that it has auto power off functionality. I have it set to 15 minutes and it shuts off when I'm not using it. I do have to manually power it back on when I print, but I like the idea of saving electricity so it's no biggie.

Other cool stuff I've found, you can print a copy of cd labels right from the printer without using a computer. You just take the CD you want to copy (i.e. a movie or an audio cd) and put it on the scanner and it will scan the CD cover and print it right on the printable CD-R without having to use the computer!

Like most reviewers have said, the paper tray is pretty small so it doesn't hold a lot of paper, but that helps to keep the printer compact. It doesn't take up a lot of space, it fits perfectly on top of my Container Store Elfa file drawer. I like though how the paper tray is a REAL tray that slides out so you can fill it back up with papers. A lot of the other brands just have a place to "slide" the paper in, and not an actual tray.

This printer is great, you'll be happy you made the switch from all those other brands. I had an HP Photosmart before this, and it died after less then 2 years of using it (wouldn't even power on even though the power supply was good). HP wouldn't even give me the time of day, they tried to sell me a cheap replacement printer as part of their "trade up" program, that cost more then this Canon one and had half the features.

Canon PIXMA MX892 Review

PIXMA MX892 Wireless Office All-In-One Printer
Superior Resolution and Speed for Wireless1 Home Office Printing
Fully-integrated 35-sheet auto duplex document feeder for rapid document copying, scanning and faxing.
PIXMA Cloud Link provides PC-free web-connected printing and mobile printing allows you to print and scan right from your iPhone, iPad or Android device.3,7
Full HD Movie Print turns your favorite HD movie clips captured with your compatible Canon EOS Digital SLR or PowerShot cameras into beautiful prints.6
The Dual Function Panel feature provides useful function buttons that transform into a keypad in fax mode for easier operation.

The printer is amazing. Set-up was easy, I just followed all the steps in the pamphlet, and then the set-up screen on the printer itself. It does come with a CD (software installation if you want to use all of the printer's functions, mostly photo enhancement and editing capabilities), but it's not required for regular printing. It's really simple to connect to the printer wirelessly through your computer.

The main reasons why I wanted this printer were: wireless, and auto duplex copy and printing. And so far, I am happy! Of course, with all auto-duplexing printers, as they get older the chance that the duplex hardware will fail increases. So, we'll see how long this lasts, but I have good hopes for the best. The printer is sturdy and seems very well built. It is easy to use, and has a lot of options for use. There is even a port on the side to put momory cards and USB drives directly into the printer, so you don't even need a computer! It also has the ability to connect to your phone so you can print things off your phone. Finally, if you want a fax, this thing connects to a phone jack and acts as a fax machine.

The only thing I don't like about this printer, is the size. I wish it were smaller, but I guess the size is a function of that auto-duplexing I like so much. It has a tray under the print-feed out that stores all the paper for printing; but if you want to print a photo or something that is non-standard size (ie. an envelope), it needs to be fed through the tray that opens up in the back. So if you thought you could put the printer flush against a wall, you would be sadly mistaken. The back tray is also necessary for printer head alignment (you get 2 sheets of "special" papers that you need for this task...I'm not sure where you can get more if for some reason you need to align the heads more than twice for some reason). So if you have a small office, pay attention to the size dimensions listed by amazon (it's also pretty heavy).

Bottom line: if you want the function of one of those mega-printers from your office in your home, this is one of the best out there. But pay attention to where you want to put it in your home, it's larger than most home-office printers.

Canon PIXMA MG3220 Review

PIXMA MG3220 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One
Compact Wireless1 All-In-One featuring Auto Duplex Printing
Built-in automatic 2-sided printing helps the environment and can cut your paper usage by up to 50%
AirPrint enabled! Print wirelessly from your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch directly to your MG3220, no drivers needed!2
My Image Garden software makes organizing and printing your photos fun and easy with great facial recognition, Fun Filters, Calendar Organization, Automatic Layout Suggestions and so much more!5
FastFront feature makes is easy to change both ink and paper right from the front of the printer.

SETUP:
Pretty much basic for a printer. Although Windows 7 didn't have drivers for the printer, the CD included did.
Connection to the PC was uneventful. There is a USB cable provided but you can connect via WiFI.

PROS:
SMALL FOOTPRINT/size for a printer + scanner:
This is a good choice if you don't want a huge printer taking up a lot of desk space. It is about the same size as my previous printer BUT it includes a scanner.

DUPLEX PRINTING:
-(aka double sided) printing. - for things such as archived TAX RETURNS.

PRINT QUALITY:
It has very good photo and document print quality. Don't forget to ALIGN the print heads!
INK CARTRIDGES:
When you replace the cartridge, you also replace the -heads- so the print quality doesn't deteriorate from extended use or time.
There are only two (1-black and 1-color)cartridges so you aren't having to replace a a single cartridge as often.

SIMPLE CONTROL PANEL:
Easy to use control panel without multiple menus to complicate what should be a simple job.

CONS:
INK CARTRIDGES:
(YES-PRO & CON) When you replace the cartridge, you also replace the -heads-. So you will pay MORE for ink cartridges. You may have to replace a color cartridge before all the colors are out.
SOFTWARE:
The software that is included is pretty much useless. What I like to do when printing pictures is print four pictures on a standard 8 1/2" x 11" sheet. (for obvious reasons - printing on separate 4" x 6" will cost you much more) The software provided, My Image Garden) does not allow this.
However, other Canon software does. The product is EASYPHOTOPRINT and it works with this printer.

OVERALL:
If you want a small footprint printer/scanner this might fit your needs.
This has an easy to use control panel for offline use but if you want a color LCD screen this is not the printer for you.

INK USAGE:
I am very disappointed by the ink use. Having used the printer for a while I can report that after printing exactly -10- 81/2x11 sheets of photos, the color ink ran out!
I don't know how much more ink is in the XL cartridges or how much longer they last but the cost per page is very expensive at that rate.
